INSCRIBED to Herman Watzinger on half title: ”Til Herman i erindring om det første store eventyret ”mellom kontinentene” som knyttet oss sammen i varig vennskap, fra Thor 20.2.1975” (To Herman in memory of the first great adventure «between the continents» which bound us together in lasting friendship, from Thor 20.2.1975”).
Herman Watzinger [1916-1986] met Thor Heyerdahl in New York where he was asked to participate in the construction of the Kon-Tiki raft and join the expedition. On board the fleet he was given responsibility for the meteorological and hydrographic measurements. Watzinger played an important role in the planning and execution of the Kon-Tiki journey. Watzinger was Heyerdahl’s second-in-command on the voyage across the Pacific in 1947.
